“The Best” marks the first release from AWOLNATION, aside from reworks, since their previous album, Here Come The Runts. It also is the first release following the destruction of Aaron Bruno’s studio in the Camp Fire wildfire of late 2018. The song features a somewhat dark and driving guitar rhythm, reminiscent of the Here Come The Runts era, while at the same time incorporating electronic touches similar to that of the Run or Megalithic Symphony eras. On that point, Aaron has hinted on Instagram that the next era may involve the “Spaceman” era of his first EP and Megalithic Symphony. Lyrically, the song focuses on insecurity and the desire to feel more confident. The first verse suggests this desire may be never-ending, he is always “just shy of greatness” and the chorus describes his need to be “the best.” Aaron has talked about insecurity in his appearance before in “People” where he sang: Well I lost my pride With this body of mine A snippet of the song was used as part of a marketing campaign with the MLB for the 2019 World Series but the tweet was later taken down.
